When we look at the history of cinema and video games, we see small and large works related to the life of samurai. Among all these titles, the most mentionable ones are Akira Kurosawa’s films. Flying Wild Hog Studio’s new game is one of the titles that has received a lot of attention since its introduction due to the life story of a samurai, as well as the black and white filter chosen to color the game. The tonality and glaze of the game in the pre-release shows reminded you of Kurosawa’s works, and on the other hand, the name Devolver Digital as the publisher had caused a special credit to this game. It remains to be seen whether Trek To Yomi has met the expectations of this sensational introduction or not.

Regarding the story of Trek to Yomi, I have to report that you are dealing with a very ordinary and incohesive story. Even the different endings of the game do not affect the appeal of the story and your penchant to replay it. The whole standpoint of the storytelling also, poor characterization of the main character, as well as for the sub-characters, has caused that there is no such thing as narrative in the game.

Trek to Yomi is a hack-and-slash action. In addition to the sword, you will deal with other weapons such as shuriken, bows, arrows, and pistols.
Trek to Yomi has no specific plans for using these tools. Although you unlock a lot of combos for swords during the game, you can easily end the game by spamming just one button and you do not need combos. Level Design from the beginning to the end is repetitive. Even puzzles are not going to entertain you. The game’s black-and-white filter and camera angle try to get your fights going in the worst possible way at some point.

Here, the tide will turn for graphics. The different angles of the camera along the way, the gray tint, and the atmosphere of the environment look attractive in the early chapters of the game; But the game’s art director does his best to diminish that appeal. For example, in the village, you often encounter a scene where a villager is shouting and running from left to right of the picture. In the final stages, when you play the illusion of the main character, the situation gets worse. In the final Chapters of platforming, the game becomes annoying due to tedious filters and bad shadows. In the midst of all this, the overall Trek to Yomi atmosphere is acceptable for creating a samurai title.

Things are getting worse when it comes to Trek to Yomi sound effects. I could not hear anything at all in one of the final chapters. During the game, the poor gameplay of the game does not allow you to pay attention to the music. The sound design in Trek to Yomi is more bark than bite. Except for the main character of the game, NPCs do not even have an amusing dialogue in the game, and that is why we do not have a special performance in this section. Most of the sound design technical problems started from the third chapter onwards. At one point in the game, I heard each sound twice which was distracting me from my fight.

In the end, Trek to Yomi is merely a high-profile game that has raised expectations for itself thanks to its black-and-white filter, as well as Devolver Digital as the publisher. A title that you may drop in the middle of the game and never get back to it.
